[post_content] => The three rural extension networks IALB, EUFRAS and SEASN, together with the University of Santiago de Compostela, are organising the International Conference on Rural Extension 2022 in Lugo (Galicia-Spain) from 21-25 June 2022. The conference is trilingual: German, English and Spanish.
Conference theme and focus
In rural areas, challenges for farms are increasing: changing agricultural policy objectives, growing environmental demands, out-of-control prices and costs, digitalisation and unexpected events such as the COVID crisis. In addition, problems on farms are increasing as they have to enter new markets and face increasing competition. They also have to deal with problems with employees, family issues or the change of generations, etc. have to be overcome, which may eventually lead to the closure or perhaps even the disappearance of the farms.
This is a major challenge because the complexity of the system in which farming activities take place, as well as the fact that people are at the centre of everything, makes the role of rural extension services increasingly necessary and important.
It is therefore necessary to strengthen the role of extension workers in the Agricultural Knowledge and Innovation System (AKIS) in general and to improve their links with the other actors in the AKIS, which, together with improving their methodological and technical skills, will be crucial for the future. A central theme of the conference is how to improve innovative knowledge sharing and transfer in rural areas.
Rural extension needs to know how to support, promote, network and advise actors in this process in the right way. This is an even greater and more important challenge considering that important issues such as food safety, environmental protection, climate change mitigation and animal welfare depend on its success.
Also, from 2023 onwards, the implementation of enhanced cross-compliance, organic schemes and other instruments will require advisors to make additional efforts to implement them properly in order to achieve a smooth transition to a sustainable agricultural system.
The conference venue of Lugo is located on the last stretch of the Way of St. James, which many pilgrims walk to find themselves and to reflect on life. Rural extension in Europe is also setting out on its journey: extension workers need to constantly update their knowledge and keep refreshing their skills, which is a major challenge to which this international conference aims to contribute through lectures and presentations as well as debates, workshops and technical excursions to farms and farm product processing plants. The international 61st IALB|11th EUFRAS|8th SEASN meeting 2022 Galicia will provide a platform for discussion and exchange of knowledge and experiences useful for improving the situation of rural areas in Europe. i2connect project aims to strengthen the role of farm and forestry advisors in interactive innovation, to support farmers and foresters in their transition to more sustainable production systems. They are

[post_content] => This year’s edition will give participants the opportunity to engage with scientists, farmers, rural communities, industry, advisors, policymakers, citizens and NGO representatives. It will provide an overview of European research and innovation activities and their achievements in agriculture, forestry and rural development. Participants will also be invited to share their views on how to shape the future EU agricultural research and innovation agenda. Field visits are organised on 2 June, indicate your interest in the
registration form.
Building on the success of the 2016 and 2018 editions, participants will find out how research and innovation activities have benefitted the implementation of the common agricultural policy (CAP) and most importantly farmers, foresters and people living in rural areas. The conference will also be a great occasion to network with around 500 peers.
The European Commissioner for Agriculture Janusz Wojciechowski will open the event. High-level speakers will discuss the global research and innovation agenda relating to farming, forestry and rural communities, and the role of research and innovation in making the
European Green Deal a reality for Europe and beyond.
Participants will be able to provide their input to update the Directorate-General for Agriculture and Rural Development’s long-term EU research and innovation agenda for agriculture, forestry and rural areas, and contribute to shaping the
Horizon Europe strategic plan 2025-27.

The Final Ploutos Event on Policy Recommendations for a Sustainable Agri-food Sector will take place at Copa Cogeca’s premises on 8th of June, 14:30-16:30 CEST.
The event will engage with all key stakeholders of the agri-food sector at the EU level, aiming to present “Preliminary set of Policy Recommendations” of Ploutos Project that can support the EC and EU Member States to enable the transition of agri-food value chains towards a Sustainable model. The Ploutos Policy Recommendations (you may find them attached) are focused on two closely linked categories:
· Policy Recommendations for Rebalancing the Agri-Food Value Chain
· Policy Recommendations for Enabling the Uptake of Digital Technologies in the Agri-Food Sector
The key objective of this final event is to lead to a clear consensus on which policies to prioritize and define the next steps to eventually shape the final Policy Set to enable the transition of agri-food value chains towards a Sustainable model.

[post_content] => The next joint IALB&EUFRAS&SEASN Conference 2023 will take place from September 10th to 14th in Dresden, Germany.
The theme of this year`s conference is the role of education and extension in the transformation process of agriculture - in the context of climate change, ensuring nutrition and societal demands.
This topic was deliberately chosen in view of the global as well as regional challenges in almost all areas of economic and social life. The dramatic events of recent years have made it clear how, in addition to the structural changes already taking place on farms, the entire agricultural sector is exposed to international influences. In addition, rapidly advancing climate change and its consequences for the availability of natural resources are leading to new environmental awareness. The need for ensuring food production and the provision of agricultural raw materials has made consumers aware of the "systemic relevance" of the agricultural and food industry. On the other hand, society's expectations of production and marketing in regional value chains geared to resource conservation and animal welfare have continued to rise. The resulting new realities for agricultural practice and the people working in it call for education and advisory services that are tailored to needs and fit for the future.
How this transformation process is taking shape under the general conditions in Saxony will be the subject of the conference. 25 years have passed since the last IALB conference in Saxony. A suitable period of time to take up many an operational development story. Likewise, consulting has undergone a profound transformation. The Saxon State Office for the Environment, Agriculture and Geology, with its extremely wide range of tasks, offers the prerequisites for an interdisciplinary transfer of knowledge in a special way. Accordingly, you can expect a wide range of information as a basis for a lively and interesting exchange at the conference. We want to take this into account by offering a varied

The course will cover crucial topics and concepts for delivering advisory work in the framework of innovation networks, such as the facilitation of interactive processes and the concept of Agricultural Knowledge and Innovation Systems (AKIS). A variety of interactive exercises will be used throughout the course to trigger students’ active participation and creativity and sensitize them to their role as future innovation advisors and the competencies they need to develop for successfully delivering advisory services. The participants will have the opportunity to get familiar with several methodological tools, such as the Spiral of Initiatives/Innovations and the Triangle of Co-creation, and put them into practice including a farm visit (innovation project). Such tools are useful for both advisors and researchers in analyzing innovation networks, identifying the role of the involved actors, and navigating through innovation ecosystems. Please have an
