On May 28th, the EUFRAS monthly Coffee Break initiative hosted an engaging session titled "BroilerNet: from Challenges to Champions," bringing together 23 real-time participants from across Europe.

Moderated by Anita Dzelme, the event featured Stefan Gunnarsson from the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences and Annunziata Palamara from CRPA in Italy, who shared how this four-year BroilerNet project is bridging the gap between scientific research and practical broiler farming. The project was born from a vital desire to truly listen to farmers' needs, establishing thirteen National Broiler Innovation Networks to identify and solve real-world industry challenges.

During the event, the speakers explained the structured process of identifying priorities in animal health, welfare, and environmental sustainability, which ultimately leads to the selection of "BroilerNet Champions". These champions are innovative practices that have undergone rigorous cost-benefit analyses based on typical farm models to ensure they are financially viable for producers. Participants were introduced to several successful examples, such as the use of elevated platforms in Spain to improve bird welfare and resting behavior, and Finland’s water-circulation central heating systems which utilize renewable energy to maintain drier bedding and significantly better footpad health. Other highlights included color-coded biosecurity measures from France and advanced preventative strategies for bacterial control in Greece.
