Project "Development of a carbon footprint guidance and calculator for recycled fertilizer products" - EUFRAS EIP-AGRI awards favourites

EUFRAS would like to present one of our favourites of the EIP- AGRI INNOVATION AWARDS 2024 OPERATIONAL GROUPS - Project "Development of a carbon footprint guidance and calculator for recycled fertilizer products" Various Carbon Calculators are currently being developed. This is the Finnish version of how to do it. The calculations are to be done in an excel file, which should not be a problem to translate. The developers claim that the calculator has been developed taking into account the legislation on the subject that has been developed so far.

Did you know there's currently no reliable tool for recycled fertiliser manufacturers to calculate and demonstrate the climate and environmental benefits of their products? While various life-cycle calculations have been conducted for fertiliser products, their results often lack comparability.

To address this, developed a groundbreaking CO2 calculator during the Projekt, aimed at benefiting recycled fertiliser manufacturers, farmers, and the food-processing industry. This easy-to-use calculator aligns with global carbon footprint calculation standards, making it the first of its kind for recycled fertilisers.

Here’s why these matters:

  • Transparency & Comparability: The carbon footprint guidelines ensure uniformity in calculations, making results more measurable, comparable, and easier to communicate.

  • Climate Impact Awareness: Operators in the food chain can now pinpoint where emissions are generated and how they can be reduced, essential for lowering climate emissions from food production.

  • Promoting Sustainable Practices: Organic fertilisers and soil improvers, which have a lower carbon footprint than energy-intensive mineral-based fertilisers, are highlighted.

What is the global Relevance & Benefits:

  • The calculator and documentation are currently available in Finnish on the project website (www.ilmastolannoite.fi), with plans for an English version underway.

  • It promotes the benefits of recycled fertilisers, which are often overlooked due to outdated perceptions of poor quality.

  • Encourages public approval and increased usage by showcasing their positive properties and lower carbon footprint.

Why Use the Carbon Footprint Calculator?

  • Competitive Edge: The lower carbon footprint of recycled fertiliser products can offer a significant competitive advantage over mineral-based alternatives.

  • Enhanced Nutrient Recycling: Contributes to self-sufficiency and security of supply, reduces nutrient discharges into water bodies, and supports good water status and health.

  • Supports Climate Goals: Provides essential CO2 data for the voluntary carbon credit market, highlighting the potential of nutrient recycling in agricultural climate efforts.

How to Get Started:

  • Use emission factors specific to your country and region.

  • Follow the international standards-based calculator for easy transferability to other regions.

  • Demonstrate the carbon footprint of your products effortlessly with our comprehensive guidelines.
